This is the exact formula the live engine runs when dynamic pricing is on — six knobs, every one of them yours. Here’s the fee, built line by line.
Start from a base fare
Use a starting fee for the delivery state, one fee everywhere, or an optional named-area override.
Add your delivery rate per kilometre
Mapbox measures the actual driving route, not the straight line between two pins, then applies your per-kilometre rate.
Add the parcel's weight
Multiply the parcel weight by your per-kilogram rate. Set the rate to ₦0 when weight should not affect the quote.
Add pickup from your dispatch base
When the parcel starts elsewhere, the trip from your warehouse or normal dispatch base to the sender uses its own per-kilometre rate.
Apply vehicle, surge and area multipliers
Bike, car and van costs, busy-window surge and named-area adjustments can multiply the subtotal, and they stack.
Finish with VAT and Express priority
VAT is calculated after the multipliers. Express is an optional flat fee added last, never multiplied by distance or weight.

What is a delivery price calculator for a logistics business?
It is software that calculates a delivery fee from your own pricing rules instead of asking a dispatcher to check a rate card. Relay combines a starting fare with real driving distance, parcel weight, pickup distance, vehicle type and optional surge or VAT. Registered Relay delivery businesses can test those rules here before enabling dynamic pricing for a live service.
How do I calculate a delivery fee per kilometre in Nigeria?
Start with a base fare, add the real driving distance multiplied by your per-kilometre rate, then add any pickup and weight charges. Vehicle, surge or area multipliers can adjust that subtotal; VAT follows, and an optional Express fee is added last. Your fuel, rider, vehicle and city costs should determine the rates you enter.
How do I add a delivery price calculator to my website?
Point your website's Get a quote button to your Relay public booking link. The customer opens a Relay page, enters the pickup and delivery addresses, sees the calculated price and submits a bookable order. Developers can also fetch configured delivery areas, fees and ETAs from GET /v1/areas; a direct dynamic-quote API is still in development.
Can my WhatsApp or Instagram chatbot quote delivery prices?
You can make your Relay public booking link the saved response or auto-reply to 'how much is delivery?'. The customer opens the link, enters the addresses and gets a bookable price on a Relay page. This works without building a bot integration, but Relay is not natively reading or replying inside your WhatsApp or Instagram conversation.
Can a roaming dispatch fleet use the delivery rate calculator?
Yes, when the business prices pickups from a normal dispatch base. Set that warehouse, office or operating base as the hub; the estimator prices the pickup from there to the sender and the delivery from sender to receiver. It does not calculate pickup from the nearest roaming rider's live position.
Can I charge merchants and walk-in customers different delivery prices?
Yes. Public P2P bookings, merchant Send Package orders and catalogue deliveries have separate service policies in Relay. Each can use dynamic pricing or fixed pricing where configured, and merchant-specific terms do not have to appear on your public booking page.
What should I charge per km for delivery in Nigeria?
There is no universal rate. Fuel, rider pay, maintenance, vehicle type, pickup distance, traffic and city all affect the amount your business needs to charge. The estimator opens with example values of ₦180 per kilometre and a ₦1,500 base fare so the interface has a worked example; they are not recommended market rates. Replace them with your own pricing.
Does the calculator use real road distance?
Yes. Addresses are geocoded and distance is measured along the driving route with Mapbox rather than as a straight line between two pins. The estimator mirrors the route-based formula used when dynamic pricing is enabled for the corresponding Relay service.
Does the estimator change my live pricing?
No. Rates you set in the estimator are saved to your browser only. When a configuration lands right, you enter it yourself in your FC dashboard under Dynamic pricing — that is the only place live pricing changes.
Who can open the estimator?
Delivery businesses registered on Relay through a fulfilment-centre account. Your estimator ID is in FC dashboard → Settings → P2P estimator access; it unlocks address search and test quotes for the centre's team without an OTP. New Relay centres receive their first two weeks of deliveries free.
What are area base overrides?
Optional starting fees for named places. If the area's name appears in the receiver's address, its base fee and zone multiplier apply; if nothing matches, the quote falls back to your state or global base fee. They never limit where you deliver.
Why is Express not part of the formula?
Express is a flat add-on, charged after the delivery fee is computed and only when the customer picks Express. It never multiplies with distance, weight or surge — set it to ₦0 to switch it off.
